Benfleet (actually South Benfleet) is in the Castle Point district of Essex. The Saxons called it ‘Beamfleote’, which means tree stream. In 894, the Battle of Benfleet took place between King Alfred of the Saxons and the Vikings. King Alfred was victorious, and had a church built to give thanks. The current St Mary the Virgin Church is Grade I listed and was built on the same site.
